Sleep Expert, Clinical Psychologist, Research Assistant Professor of Psychology
Dr. Daniel Jin Blum is a sleep psychologist and Research Assistant Professor at NYU Shanghai. He is also a Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine and a Board Certified International Sleep Disorder Specialist.
Dr. Blum's research focuses on the intricate connections between circadian rhythms, sleep, and metabolic health, with a particular interest in how eating and fasting patterns influence circadian alignment and its related health outcomes.
Prior to his role at NYU Shanghai, Dr. Blum's extensive training included a Behavioral Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Stanford University and work as a Research Psychologist at UC Berkeley's Sleep & Mood Research Clinic.
He is the author of "Sleep Wise: How to Feel Better, Work Smarter, and Build Resilience," a book that explores improving well-being through sleep and mindfulness practices. In addition to his academic and clinical work, Dr. Blum consults with digital health companies, advising on the integration of sleep and behavioral science with technology.
Dr. Blum holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology and a BA in Psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is a licensed psychologist in California, Colorado, and Florida.
For my entire life, I had been told by family, friends, and media that snoring was a sign of normal deep sleep, not chronic sleep deprivation. As I continued to learn that difficulties with memory, feeling overwhelmingly sleepy during the day, and falling asleep during meetings or classes were also signs of sleep disorders, the gears in my head began to click. Maybe my partner and I both had serious sleep disorders.
